Monitoring and Research |
At a general level it is important for us to be able to track changes that are taking place in our marine environment. Monitoring the marine environment is always more challenging than on land, because we have less insight into what is going on, and research studies require specialist equipment. Specifically we are required to be able to ensure that fishing activities are not having an impact on the habitats and species that are within our protected area network.
The IFCA also needs to ensure that it monitors the fish and shellfish that are being caught – data on the Catch per Unit Effort (CPUE) for example can provide a valuable insight into the health of the fishery.
